f you’re interested in strange, rollicking, beautiful, nuanced, queer, comedic, exquisitely wrought comics, look no further than the work of Donna Barr. Her classic series The Desert Peach and Stinz are truly sui generis works that you should be reading this very minute. Donna’s contributions to the first issue of slips slips demonstrate her range as a writer and illustrator by comprising both a large-scale, full-throated illustration in defense of drag and a small but powerful haiku.
ss: Is there any special background/context to your slips slips contributions that you'd like to share?
DB: Enough with using a tiny, vulnerable portion of the population as a stalking horse lie to terrorize our country.
ss: Name three writers or artists, and tell us why you named them.
DB: Kipling, best use of English.
And now my brain died.
ss: If you could unilaterally add one amendment to the U.S. Constitution, what would it be?
DB: No amendment shall be made to the Constitution that shall restrict the rights of any people, irregardless of citizenship, and shall instead be a tool only to deny oppression and the theft of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
ss: Ghost, vampire, werewolf, or zombie? Why?
DB: Werewolf. Because good boy cartoons.
ss: What's the book everyone seeing this should read if they haven't already?
DB: Pudd'nhead Wilson, Mark Twain.
ss: What geography has had the biggest impact on your life and work?
DB: The Pacific Northwest
ss: If you had to write/create for an audience of one, who would it be?
DB: I already do - ME.
ss: What has been one of your most satisfying/gratifying creative moments?
DB: Helping a kid come out, or deal with a father's death, or a man realize he's a homophobe, and self-correct.
ss: Rock or hard place?
DB: I already have them both.
ss: What other questions might you like to have been asked? And (optional) what are your answers to those questions?
DB: Why is they the best pronoun?
