When Eric Winick contributed a dispatch to to the first issue of slips slips, he took the brief seriously. His piece, “Dispatch from the Resistance Front” is a time capsule from late 2024, when we knew that the incoming administration would wreak horrors, but we didn’t yet know exactly how. His clear-eyed analysis of what we were in for feels both nostalgic and prescient at the same time.
ss: If you could unilaterally add one amendment to the U.S. Constitution, what would it be?
EW: I don't know that I'd add a whole amendment. I'd probably tinker with the 14th, Section 3, which states that anyone that has held office and engaged in insurrection or rebellion, or given aid or comfort to our enemies, may be removed by a 2/3 vote in each House. A simple majority of votes in the Senate should suffice, or better yet, put it to a popular vote with a secret ballot, so anyone afraid of being threatened by POTUS or their own constituency can vote anonymously.
ss: Ghost, vampire, werewolf, or zombie? Why?
EW: I'm going with Werewolf, if only because you're a normal, thinking human at least half the time, and the other half, you're pure id. What a life!
ss: What's the book everyone seeing this should read if they haven't already?
EW: Midnight in Chernobyl by Adam Higginbotham. If anyone's curious as to what happens when governments cut corners on major infrastructure projects, deny wrongdoing as thousands die of cancer, and stifle attempts to unearth the truth, this book is for you.
